july 30, 2003 These two homeless men were sitting on a row of benches in Tompkins Square Park today. Benches the length of the dining room table in Batman. Two men. One long bench. They were speaking to each other. Could have been misconstrued as shouting at each other. But they were talking. One at either end of the row of benches. How far is that? 20 feet? 50 feet? I'm bad at distance estimation. But there they sat, talk(shouting) to each other in slightly slurred voices the men of the park always seem to aquire. About the weather, about the day, about the people passing. "OOO WWHHHEEEE...look at that one." But still the distance bothered me. I wanted to pick both of them up and move them to the center of the row so they could speak to each other in hushed voices. Like the other people of the park, speaking in tongues and whispers, with the occasional loud belly laugh. Why were they so far apart? Do drunk or lazy to move? It was so awkward. So inappropriate for everyday life.
